Why It’s Not Too Late to Get Orthodontic Treatment

The truth is: there’s no such thing as being “too old” for braces or any other orthodontic treatment. A smile makeover can be a great investment for a person, no matter their age, by offering many benefits that include the following:

  • Fixes bad bites, misaligned teeth, or other problems, which will greatly improve your oral and overall health.
  • Relieves jaw pain and pressure.
  • Aligns teeth to make cleaning, flossing, and maintaining general oral health much easier.
  • Improves the quality of your personal and professional life, as well as your overall self-esteem levels.
  • Gives you a boost of confidence, to increase levels of happiness and drastically improve your outlook on life!

Differences Between Adult Treatment and Early Treatment

Adult orthodontic treatment. There are two main differences with orthodontic treatment for adults. First, the growth and development of the jaws is complete in adults, meaning that orthodontic appliances can’t actually change the jaw structure of an adult as they can with a child. The other difference is that periodontal (gum) disease is more prevalent in adults, which could prevent treatment from starting. If your gum tissues aren’t healthy, bone loss can occur during orthodontic treatment and weaken the long-term health of your teeth. It’s important that gum disease is under control before treatment has started, to ensure optimal results are achieved.

Our Treatment Options

At 20 Mile Orthodontics, we understand that all patients have different needs and concerns – which is why we’re glad to offer a variety of orthodontic treatments to suit each and every need of our patients. While each treatment works in essentially the same way (by employing light and constant force to move your teeth into proper alignment), our methods have different benefits depending on what you’re looking for. Our treatment options include:

Traditional Metal Braces.Traditional Metal Braces — When you think of braces, this is almost certainly what comes to mind. However, modern metal braces are now much smaller and more comfortable ever. These traditional braces feature small metal brackets that are bonded to the front of the teeth. A thin wire runs through the brackets and will be attached on either end to metal bands that go through a back molar.

Clear Braces.Clear Braces — Instead of noticeable metal brackets, clear braces have brackets made of ceramic, plastic, or a combination of both. While they offer a more discreet treatment option, they’re also more susceptible to breakage.

Clear Orthodontic Aligners.Invisalign — An alternative to braces is the usage of clear, removable aligners, also known as Invisalign. This treatment includes a series of clear plastic tray sets that are customized to comfortably slide over your teeth. Each set of trays is to be worn in an intended order, allowing them to gradually shift your teeth into their desired position. The best part about Invisalign is that nobody will even notice you’re undergoing treatment!

Lingual Braces.Lingual Braces — What makes these metal braces different is that they’re actually bonded to the back of one’s teeth instead of the front. When it comes to braces, this treatment offers the most discreet treatment since no one else will be able to see them. However, they may take some time to get used to and they’ll cost more than both metal and clear braces.

After your initial exam, Dr. Struhs will outline your course of treatment and work with you to decide which of our options are right for you. No matter which treatment you choose, and eventually complete, you’ll need to wear a retainer to keep the teeth in place. This retention phase is crucial for a patient, as insufficient usage of a retainer can lead to the teeth shifting back into misalignment – which is certainly something none of us want to see happen. We’ll instruct you on how to properly wear your retainer so that your new, attractive smile will stay just the way it is for years and years to come.
