It’s best to schedule an orthodontic screening for your child as early as possible, so that they can begin adolescent treatment on time. Below you’ll find more information on the importance of bringing your child into one of our two convenient office locations.

The Importance of Early Orthodontic Screening

Orthodontic Problems.

We agree with the recommendation made by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), that states all children should receive orthodontic screenings by the time they turn 7 years of age. This is when an orthodontist can quickly identify potential orthodontic problems, so they can be treated early if necessary. For example, orthodontic appliances such as spacers and expanders may be used before before braces go on. The longer you wait, the more complex the issues can become, which can makes them more challenging and costly to treat. This early examination can help determine when the best time to start treatment is, to save you the most time and money

When Earlier Treatment Is Better

Early orthodontic intervention is very helpful in treating some common malocclusions or “bad bites,” including cross bites, crowded teeth, overbites and underbites. When a malocclusion and other alignment issues are not treated, it can result in issues such as:

  • The inability to thoroughly clean crowded or crooked teeth, which can lead to tooth decay or gum disease.
  • Accidental chipping or breaking of protruding teeth.
  • Unfavorable growth and uneven wear of the teeth due to untreated cross bites.
  • Tongue-thrusting habits and speech problems due to untreated open bites.

Catching and identifying these problems early is key. After an examination, we can thoroughly explain your options to you and the best possible course of treatment.

Advantages of Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment

 Dangers of Thumb Sucking.

One of the first things people notice about you if your smile, and straight and healthy teeth help contribute to a lifetime of happiness! There are many advantages associated with early interceptive treatment including:

  • Creates room for crowded, erupting teeth, as well as saves space for teeth that haven’t grown in yet.
  • Influences how the jaw grows, which creates optimal facial symmetry.
  • Reduces the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth.
  • Eliminates the need for tooth extraction.
  • Shortens the amount of time spent wearing braces.
  • Saves you money, compared to treatment received as an adult.
  • Greatly boosts a child’s self-esteem and confidence.

As you can see, orthodontic treatment can do much more than just improve the appearance of a smile as it can greatly improve both oral and overall health.

Thumb Sucking - Dear Doctor Magazine

How Thumb Sucking Affects The Bite Thumb sucking can actually block the front teeth from erupting fully and can also push the teeth forward — sometimes more on the side where the thumb rested. When the pressure exerted by the thumb in the mouth is particularly strong and occurs over a long period of time, the forces can potentially influence growth of the jaws... Read Article
