Dr. Struhs Answers FAQs About Invisalign

Dr. Ted Struhs of 20 Mile Orthodontics & Prairie Hawk Orthodontics is proud to provide Invisalign to patients in and around Parker and Castle Rock, CO. It’s one of the most popular treatment for our teenage and adult patients, as the Invisalign System moves teeth without the use of any metal wires or brackets. Instead, a series of removable plastic aligner trays are used to gradually move the teeth comfortably and efficiently, without anyone knowing you’re undergoing treatment!

Whether you’re in the preliminary stages of orthodontic treatment, or already use Invisalign, it’s important to understand how the aligners work. Below are some of the most commonly asked questions about Invisalign, along with our answers, so you have a clear understanding of how the system works.

Q. How often do I  need to wear my aligners?

A. In order for Invisalign to work effectively, the aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours each day. You can take the aligners out when eating & drinking and when brushing & flossing. You can also remove them briefly for special occasions, like school photos or job interviews, as long as you put them right back in when done. Compliance is a key aspect of Invisalign, as well as any other orthodontic treatment, as Dr. Struhs wants your treatment to progress as planned.

Q. Are there any restrictions to what I can eat with Invisalign?

A. No. Unlike braces, you’re free to continue enjoying all your favorite foods including hard, crunchy, chewy and sticky foods as you simply remove the aligners before eating. However, be sure to only consume these sugary foods and sweets moderately, as cavities and tooth decay are always possible. Also, be sure to brush your teeth and the aligners before placing them back in your mouth after eating.

Q. Will wearing the aligners affect my speech?

A. When you first start wearing Invisalign, you may notice that your speech sounds a bit different but don’t worry! With a little practice, your speech will quickly return to normal.

Q. Is there any discomfort with Invisalign® treatment?

A. Like with braces and other orthodontic appliances, you will feel some pressure and minor discomfort for a day or two with each tray. This is normal and an indicator that your teeth are gradually moving into their final desired position that has been carefully planned out by Dr. Struhs.

Q. Can I chew gum with my aligners in?

A. We don’t recommend it, as chewing gum will stick to the aligners and can get messy.

Q.  What about smoking?

A. We don’t recommend smoking with the aligners in, as the smoke can discolor and stain the plastic material the aligners are made of.

Q. How do I keep my aligners clean?

A. Brushing them with toothpaste will keep them fresh and clean.

Q. How often do I see an orthodontist while wearing Invisalign®?

A. We will ask you to come in every five to six weeks so we can make sure your treatment is progressing as planned.

Q. Will I get a retainer after treatment?

A. Once you’re finished wearing Invisalign, we will provide you with a custom-made retainer that you will need to wear at night indefinitely. Sleeping with your retainer in will help maintain your new smile for the rest of your life!

Q. How long will my treatment last?

A. Your length of treatment depends upon the severity of your orthodontic problem being treatment. Generally speaking, treatment can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months to complete.

Q. Does Invisalign work for kids?

A. Yes, children can be treated with Invisalign as long as their second molars have completely come in which typically occurs between the ages of 11 and 13.
